Post-election process has moved from the polling stations to the constituencies, marking a shift from vote counting to result aggregation, even as Melatewerk Hailu, chairperson of the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), prepares for a final round of voting in military camps and sites hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs).
“Vote counting has been completed in all polling stations nationwide and that results have already been posted at the station level,” she said in her fourth post-election press briefing, held at the Skylight Hotel on Africa Avenue, (Bole Road) today, June 3, 2026.
With the station-level count concluded, the electoral process has entered its next phase. According to Melatewerk, constituency-level aggregation has now began. Once this tabulation is finalised, the results will be transferred to the centre for further processing before the official results are announced.
But the process is not yet complete. The Board is preparing to conduct voting on June 9, 2026, in military camps and locations where IDPs are residing.
“These votes will be incorporated into the national electoral process before final results are declared,” said the Chairperson.
The additional voting exercise introduces a late procedural step into a process already moving toward national tabulation. However, Melatewerk does not expect this to affect the Board’s timetable for announcing the overall election results.
“Voting in military camps and IDP sites can be completed within a relatively short period,” said Melatwerk. "However, if we encounter circumstances beyond our control, we can, in accordance with the law, extend the result announcement process by up to 20 days. Therefore, we will announce the results after including the votes from IDP sites and military camps.”
The Board’s message was one of procedural confidence, but also institutional caution. While station-level counting has ended, the official outcome remains pending until constituency-level tabulation is completed, the additional votes from military and IDP sites are included, and the Board certifies the results.
The complaint process has also begun. The Board disclosed that it has so far received one official complaint from the Kucha Democratic Party. For Melatewerk, complaints are “normal part of the electoral process”.
“The Board’s complaint-handling mechanism remains open to parties and candidates seeking legal remedies related to the election process,” she said.
Melatewerk also used the briefing to caution political parties against prematurely declaring themselves winners before the official tabulation and certification process is completed. She stated that announcing election winners falls solely under the mandate of the Board.
"That is the Board's work," she said, criticising such declarations as inappropriate.
