Addis Abeba Mandates GPS for Public Transport

Public transport service providers will have until May 8, 2022 to install GPS tracking devices on their vehicles, says the Addis Abeba City Transport Bureau.

The directive applies to public and private buses, and minibus taxis with plate codes 1 and 3. Ride-hailing services are exempted.

Officials are introducing the new requirements ahead of the federal government’s scheduled lifting off of fuel subsidies.

Vehicle owners will see subsidies lifted in four rounds beginning July 2022. They will bear the full brunt of global prices by the following July.

Public transport providers will see subsidies lifted over a five-year period. Pumping stations will offer two rates, thus officials’ keenness to monitor the activities and consumption of vehicles entitled to lower fuel prices.
