Adanech Abebie, the attorney general, is likely to be sworn in as a deputy mayor of Addis Abeba, replacing Takele Uma, who was today nominated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) to be the minister of Mines & Petroleum.
Takele tendered his resignation from the city last week after facing strong criticism at a recent meeting by the ruling party's Oromia chapter, according to multiple sources.
The city council is about to convene an extraordinary meeting today at the parliament to appoint replacements for Takele and Endaworke Abite, the deputy mayor of the city, who has been appointed deputy director-general of the Metals & Engineering Corporation (MetEC).
A former head of the Oromia Transport Bureau, Takele was appointed to serve as Addis Abeba’s deputy mayor, replacing Diriba Kuma two years ago. Since he was not a councilor of the City Administration, he was installed by Prime Minister Abiy as deputy mayor with the rank of mayor. An engineer by training, Takele previously served as mayor of Holeta and Suluta towns, both in Oromia Regional State.
His likely replacement was a minister for Revenues before moving to the Office of the Attorney General six months ago. Adanech had previously been head of the then OPDO secretariat and Mayor of Adama.
Her deputy, Gedion Timotios (PhD), has been nominated by the Prime Minister to replace Adanech. He is known to be an outstanding student of law and an accomplished scholar.
Prime Minister Abiy has also nominated Kenea Yadeta (PhD) as minister of Defense, replacing Lemma Megeressa, and Samuel Urkato (PhD), as the minister of Science & Higher Education, replacing Hirut Woldemariam (PhD), who moved to the Office of the Prime Minister as an advisor.
Nigussu Tilahun, head of the press secretariat at the Office of the Prime Minister Office, was appointed as commissioner of the Jobs Creation Commission, while Yohannes Buayalew was named as the new director of the Institute of Strategic Affairs (ISS).
