Ethiopian Airlines Group is set to leverage its logistic hub to distribute products of AliExpress, the Chinese online retail service. An official launch of AliExpress in Ethiopia is set for tomorrow, August 22, 2024, at the Skylight Hotel on Airport Road, with senior executives from both companies scheduled to attend.
Launched in 2010, AliExpress, a part of Alibaba Group's commerce empire, is a platform for small businesses from China and other regions, including Singapore, to supply products to international online shoppers.
The partnership is expected to potentially offer an advantage to businesses that use platforms like AliExpress to penetrate international markets. The launch is also seen as a leap in Ethiopia's e-commerce industry. The Ministry of Innovation & Technology (MINT) is in the process of launching an inaugural national strategy to fill the regulatory void. Its five-year strategy is designed to broaden the e-commerce space, making it more accessible to domestic and global markets, boost foreign exchange revenues, and establish an ecosystem equipped with regulations and technological advancements.
The strategy is intended to articulate the nature of e-commerce modalities like business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and consumer-to-consumer within a regulatory framework.
