Foreign residents have a month long window to verify the authenticity of their documents before Immigration Citizenship Services (ICS), according to its Director.
The decision comes agains the backdrop of 18,000 temporary resident permits allegedly forged, including 1,500 visas and 1,800 documents issued to individuals with Ethiopian heritage. Immigration authorities say fake passports had been identified in the wake of the reform at the ICS.
The ICS has been a source of frustration for the past few years, keeping citizens for two years before issuing new or renew expired passports. This led to administrative reshuffles that brought Selamawit Dawit to the front as a director. She has been leading several changes, including deals with international companies to print passports and clear the clogged renewal process.
Selamawit believes that greater automation would be the only way to manage the several administrative issues her institution is blamed for.
"We've been conducting system audits," Selamawit told Fortune.
She also revealed that "definitive" agreements to bring about E-Passports had been signed with an overseas company whose identity remains undisclosed.
