Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) have approved 1.2 million dollars in grant to pay for the feasibility studies for a 1,512Km railway line that is planned to connect Ethiopia with Sudan.
The rail line is planned to start from Addis Abeba and pass through Weldia, Wereta, Gonder and Metema, covering 594Km in Ethiopia's territory. Across the Sudan, it spans 918Km, connecting Metema with the Port of Sudan running through Galabat-Gadarif-Kassala and Haiya towns.
The feasibility study, estimated to cost of 3.4 million dollars, will take 24 months with technical, economic, environmental and social viability, as well as alternative financing arrangements, including a public-private partnership (PPP). The African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional-rate lending arm, has agreed to cover 35pc of the cost for the study, whereas the remaining financing will be provisioned by the NEPAD Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF) in the form of a two-million-dollar grant, and each country will pitch in 100,000 dollars, according to a statement issued by AfDB.
Ethiopia has been ferrying two percent of its cargo through the Port of Sudan. The project, which was approved in January, is also expected to take up to four and a half years for completion.
