Long-Pending Sharia Court Reform Bill Submitted to Parliament for Scrutiny

After 25 years, the amended Sharia court proclamation has been submitted to federal lawmakers to update the legal framework governing the system. The revision aims to strengthen governance structures and improve service delivery within Sharia courts. First tabled last week, the draft is expected to address long-standing operational and administrative challenges that have persisted over time. The proposal has also been forwarded to the Federal Sharia Court and the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs for institutional input. In addition, the Ministry of Justice and the National Bank of Ethiopia have been engaged to provide technical and regulatory reviews from their respective mandates. Following these consultations, the draft bill has been sent to the relevant parliamentary standing committee for detailed examination before advancing to the next stage of the legislative process.
