Tariff Reform Powers EEP Revenue to 119 Billion Br

Tariff Reform Powers EEP Revenue to 119 Billion Br

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) collected 119 billion Br in revenue during the 2025-2026 fiscal year, up 57.8pc from the previous year, while recording a gross profit of 39.5 billion Br. The performance comes as EEP faces public scrutiny over a multi-year electricity tariff reform. EEP achieved 92pc of its 129.8 billion Br revenue target. It attributed the performance to improved revenue collection systems and better coordination, following a period in which the utility operated at a significant loss. The tariff reform, launched in September 2024, introduced phased quarterly increases aimed at achieving cost recovery by 2028. It has prompted widespread complaints from households and businesses over sharply higher electricity bills. In one reported case, a bill of 2,500 Br rose to more than 10,000 Br, while concerns persist that lower- and middle-class consumers are bearing much of the burden. CEO Ashebir Balcha called for continued cost control and revenue diversification. However, the reform's impact on consumers remains under scrutiny as EEP works to strengthen its financial position.
