Land Transfers Surge, but Auctions Play Marginal Role in Capital

In Addis Abeba, public land lease auctions have reshaped the city’s landscape over the past four years. Nearly 790,000 square meters of land, equivalent to 110 standard football fields, have been transferred through these auctions. In the past six months alone, the city transferred 239,000 square meters through such auctions. During the first half of the year, a total of 4.83 million square meters of land was transferred, but only five percent of this was allocated through public land lease auctions. The Addis Abeba Land Development and Administration Bureau revealed these figures after holding its eighth round of public land lease auctions. In the latest auction, a square meter of land in Kolfe Qeranyo District was leased for 156,080 Br. During the same round, 134 plots covering 39,601 square meters across eight of the city’s 11 districts were transferred. The bureau resumed transferring land through auctions in 2022 after a five-year pause. Since then, it has held eight rounds of auctions, transferring a total of 790,000 square meters across 2,008 plots.
