China pledged to donate 10 million doses of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines to Ethiopia and other African countries. Initiated at the request of the World Health Organisation (WHO), China will donate the vaccines to the COVAX initiative to meet the needs of developing countries.
COVAX was launched in April by the WHO, the European Commission and France to provide innovative and equitable access to COVID-19 diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.
The pledge comes just weeks after the Ministry of Health announced that Ethiopia is expected to receive nine million doses by the end of April. The Ministry also highlighted that it expects to have 20pc of the population vaccinated before the end of the year.
Over 151,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Ethiopia since March 2020 and 2,259 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic.
