When insurers are not at their day jobs, controlling risk and ensuring stability, they are engaging in a rich social and personal life. Unlike their colleagues in the banking sector, presidents of Ethiopia’s insurance firms are more social media savvy, diverse and younger. Two of the CEOs are women, compared to the bankers’ all-male line up, and most are in their 40s and early 50s. FORTUNE asked what the presidents fear, regret and wish for in their personal lives. From serving jail time to having dinner with Jawar Mohammed, 16 of the 18 insurance firm presidents answered uninhibited. The CEO of Oromia Insurance could not be reached because he was overseas, while that of Lion Insurance declined to be interviewed.
Being that it is an industry at the nexus of controlling risk and ensuring stability, the insurance industry seems like a staid sector. That being said, Fortune wondered what makes insurance CEOs tick. Fortune had an impromptu conversation with 16 of the 18 leading minds of the industry to learn more about them.
