Addis Abeba Cabinet Approves Major Institutional Shake-Up, Redraws District Boundaries

Addis Abeba’s City Cabinet under Mayor Adanech Abiebie has signed off on a broad restructuring of city governance, including new institutional mergers, redrawn district boundaries, and reforms to public health and land management.

A Tourism Commission will be established, while the Design & Construction Bureau is set to merge with the Mega Projects Construction Office. The Social Trust Fund will fold into the Community Participation and Voluntarism Coordination Commission. Oversight of public restrooms management will shift to the Water & Sewerage Authority.

The Cabinet also approved a proposal to revise administrative boundaries in three districts, part of a Planning Bureau initiative meant to improve service access and managing population growth. Changes are also coming to the Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) system. A new membership contribution structure, drafted by the Health Bureau, has been approved. The Cabinet alsp gave the green light to several land allocations for projects designated as "national priorities".

City officials say the decisions, passed during the Cabinet’s meeting yesterday are part of a broader effort to streamline administration and align public services with Addis Abeba’s long-term development needs.
