Parliament today appointed Taye Atskeselassie, a foreign minister, as the fifth president of the Republic, succeeding Sahle-Worq Zewde, the first female head of state since the existing constitution was ratified in 1995.
The nomination was approved with five MPs abstaining.
Born in Debarq region of Gonder, in the Amhara Regional State, Taye brings several years of diplomatic experience to the largely ceremonial post. He served as Ethiopia's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) starting in 2018 before being named foreign minister. His diplomatic career includes roles as consul general in Los Angeles, assignments in Washington, D.C., and Stockholm, and a tenure as ambassador to Egypt.
Educated at Addis Abeba and Lancaster universities, studied political science, international relations, and strategic studies.
The outgoing President, Sahle-Worq, who served a single term, signalled her decision not to seek reappointment. She had an arguably controversial tweet on her personal account last week.
