Ethiopian Parliament has voted to strip the immunity of Chala Wata (PhD), a member of the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) and the former president of Bulehora University.
Allegations have been made over Chala's alleged abuse of his position as the University's president during a procurement process. Etsegenet Mengistu, the chair of the Law & Justice Standing Committee, informed the Parliament that assets have been discovered under Chala's spouse's possession, believed to have been acquired through procurement deals.
The decision to revoke Chala's immunity was reached through a majority vote, with Chala himself abstaining from the vote.
The removal of Chala's immunity may pave the way for further investigations and possible legal action against the MP and University president.
