The United States has donated 37 million dollars to Ethiopia to help the country mitigate the potential spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The funding will be used to ensure continued operations at Hawassa Industrial Park to preserve jobs and repurpose manufacturing facilities to produce personal protective equipment (PPE) for domestic and regional use to support and enhance COVID-19 case surveillance and investigations among others. The money will also be used for contact tracing and to strengthen laboratories to prepare lab systems for large-scale testing for the virus.
Through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC), the United States is working with partners from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Peace, and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute.
The United States is also working with the National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) and other international and local partners to provide life-saving support in response to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency.
The United States has been supporting lab systems in preparation for large-scale COVID-19 testing and public health screenings to help Ethiopia and other countries implement emergency plans.
Over the past 20 years, the United States has spent more than 13 billion dollars in total assistance to Ethiopia, with nearly four billion dollars going to the health sector.
