In a world where resilience and love are often tried and tested, Salem Getachew's (MD) luminous spirit stands as a testament to the enduring power of hope and human connection.
Last week, we bid farewell to this radiant 28-year-old medical professional, whose unparalleled commitment to life, even amidst her personal battles, left an indelible mark on many of us fortunate enough to know her.
Hailing from Lycée Guébré-Mariam, the French international school on Churchill Avenue, Salem's academic journey was nothing short of remarkable. A polyglot, Dr. Salem effortlessly switched between French, English, and local languages. Such multilingual fluency widened her reach, making her an inspiration to countless youngsters.
Her brilliance was no fleeting spark. She continued to blaze her trail, graduating from medical school with high honours. This prodigious talent, combined with her humility and propensity to place others above herself, was a testament to her character.
She was a woman of many talents; a master of craft-making, a culinary marvel, and an unceasing beacon of spiritual and ethical guidance. She nurtured children, teaching them crafts, life skills, and ethical principles. She found joy in the kitchen, crafting delectable dishes and pastries that earned her the acclaim of many, even enticing a couple to feature her delicacies at their wedding.
At first glance, we could be forgiven for thinking Salem led a charmed life. Her radiant smile, coupled with her effervescent personality, painted the picture of a life untouched by hardships. However, unbeknownst to many, this remarkable woman had been waging a fierce battle against breast cancer for the past four years.
The diagnosis was a cruel twist of fate, coming just months after she had met her soul mate, Samuel Fisseha (MD). Their love story, though, was anything but ordinary.
The ravages of chemotherapy, which might have weakened lesser souls, only drew them closer. He proposed to Salem amidst the sterile confines of a hospital room, turning a place of pain into a sanctuary of love. Salem often credited their marriage for adding years to her life, believing that their shared love gave them unparalleled strength.
Their union was a living attestation to the age-old vows of 'in sickness and in health.' They navigated the treacherous waters of a grim diagnosis, not as two individuals but as one entity. For Salem, the journey deepened her understanding of true love.
It was during her health trials that she felt the unwavering support and affection of her husband, who never ceased to shower her with love and assurances of her beauty.
Their love story was nothing short of transformative. Their union served as a beacon, illuminating the infinite potential of love to inspire, renew faith, and heal. Theirs was a reminder that love could provide solace even in the darkest of times.
Samuel's role did extend beyond that of a loving partner. He was a steadfast caregiver, ensuring that Selam never felt alone in her battle. He found joy in the little moments — celebrating milestones, anniversaries, and even the small victories in her health journey. In his devotion, many saw a blueprint for love in its purest form.
Yet, the universe had a different plan.
The curtain fell prematurely on this love story, leaving Samuel and many of us close to her heartbroken. Her passing is a gaping wound. I feel the weight of her loss, facing health scares induced by profound grief.
Selam might have left the physical realm, but her legacy endures. She was more than a physician or a friend; she was my confidant, a pillar of strength, and an irreplaceable part of my life. She was a comforting presence during the tumultuous storms of my life.
I share this here not wanting this to be just a eulogy but a celebration of Selam's life. In the face of adversity, her memory will last as a poignant reminder that even in the shadow of death, love remains undefeated.
