Wind Plant Enters Grid as Electricity Output Hits 10,000 MW

Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP) has inaugurated the 100-megawatt Assela Wind Power Project in Oromia Regional State, advancing efforts to diversify energy sources and expand electricity supply. Speaking at the ceremony, Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said the country’s power generation capacity has reached 10,000 megawatts, up from about 4,000 megawatts at the start of recent reforms. Developed by EEP, the Assela facility consists of 29 turbines and is expected to generate around 300 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, supplying power to approximately 140,000 households. Built at a cost of about 145 million euros, the project was financed through concessional loans and grants, with support from the Kingdom of Denmark. Officials said the project could recover its investment within two years. The Prime Minister also highlighted broader sector improvements, noting that EEP’s revenue has grown from around seven billion Br to more than 75 billion Br, with the utility recording a seven billion Br profit in six months for the first time. With annual electricity generation estimated between 26,000 and 29,000 gigawatt-hours.
