The Addis Abeba City Administration's Vital Events Registration & Information Agency is undergoing a reform to strengthen its services starting from weredalevel offices. Aimed at better productivity, the Agency will give training to weredastaff on the efficiency of working procedures and work on awareness creation for the general public on the importance of registering births and deaths. The Agency had been facing a basic problem on vital registration of deaths and births, according to Takele Necha (PhD), director-general at the Agency. "People don't understand the importance of registering these events," he said. "The office will work on informing people of its significance." This along with capacity building at the weredalevel is expected to bolster registration and aid the Agency in getting exact figures, especially on death reports. Last year, the Agency registered 3,117 deaths and 5,430 births in the city.
