The Addis Abeba Transport Bureau, working with the City Roads Authority, will launch the construction of the capital’s first electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor this year—a landmark step toward sustainable urban mobility, said Mohammed Hussen, Team Leader for BRT Development, Study, and Technical Support at the Transport Bureau. The 15.3 km, third-generation electric BRT line, financed with 85 million euros by the French Development Agency (FDA), will link Menelik II Square, Mercato, Teklehaymanot, Mexico, Qera, Gofa Gebriel, German Square, and Jemo. Project Management and Construction Supervision (PMCSC) will be handled by SYSTRA in partnership with Core Consulting Engineers. The operation consultancy team includes SYSTRA, Espelia, and Far East Mobility. Corridor and station construction is contracted to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), while electric bus depots will be built by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The corridor is designed to support modern electric buses with a capacity of 6,000 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD), marking a major milestone in the city’s shift toward clean, efficient, and inclusive public transport. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2027.
