The Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has received a portable X-Ray Fluorescence Analyzer from Pure Earth to strengthen the detection and prevention of lead contamination. The device can test soil, dust, paint, consumer products and other materials for lead and toxic elements, providing field results within seconds. Officials said it will help experts identify contamination hotspots, conduct environmental assessments and gather evidence for regulatory action. The donation builds on an existing partnership that has trained experts, revitalised the National Lead Coordination Committee and prepared initial environmental assessments in Addis Ababa, Adama, Hawassa and Bahir Dar. The EPA and its partners also plan to coordinate a nationwide five-year lead poisoning prevention roadmap.
