Telebirr to Introduce Airline Ticket Sales Feature

The country's two largest public enterprises have inked a deal to begin the sale of airline tickets on the state-owned Ethio telecom's Telebirr mobile money platform. Ethiopian Airlines and the telecom operator began piloting the digital ticket sales in February, selling 6.7 million Br worth of domestic and international tickets. Telebirr has garnered over 127 million customers since it was launched last May. It has facilitated transactions worth 12.8 billion Br. The platform also offers options for digital remittances, thus far facilitating the transfer of a little under 530,000 dollars. Ethio telecom has plans to integrate the platform with 20 governmental and non-governmental institutions, allowing users to pay for services online through Telebirr. There are 52 partners using Telebirr for online payments; including traffic fines and utility bills.
