Joint Operations Expose Scale of Illegal Trade in Billions

Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael said coordinated operations over the past five years have resulted in the seizure of contraband goods valued at more than 53 billion Br. He presented the findings during a joint review meeting with the Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, noting a sharp increase from earlier periods when annual seizures averaged around two billion birr. In the past six months alone, joint operations with other security agencies recovered over 14 billion Br worth of import and export-related contraband. The commissioner added that 384 individuals suspected of corruption-related offences are currently under arrest and investigation, reflecting strengthened inter-agency cooperation. Commissioner Samuel Urkato(PhD) said the Federal Police’s shift toward digital systems for crime prevention and investigation marks significant progress. The meeting reviewed achievements under the existing memorandum of understanding and underscored continued collaboration between the two.
