Ministry of Water & Energy launched a renewable energy project dubbed Distributed Renewable Energy Agriculture Modalities (DREAM) with funds secured from the Global Energy Alliance for People & Planet and the Africa Development Bank (ADB). The project aimed to address solar-generated energy to agriculture, primarily for irrigation across the Amhara, Oromia, Sidama, and Southern Regional states. It is implemented with a 20 million dollar cost. It is part of Ethiopia's national electrification program, which aspires to cover its geography with electricity in 2030. Over 15,000 people will access energy, clean water, and street lights. The project hoped to replace diesel engine pumps with electric-powered alternatives for the irrigation project on 1,500hcts of land. Recently, the federal government has launched a project to build a hybrid mini-grid power plant in all regions, except Harari, Tigray, and Benishangul-Gumuz, at an estimated cost of 217 million dollars to generate 35MW power. The project will have the capacity to deliver power to 240,000 households.
