Parliament Grills Education Minister

Education Minister Berhanu Nega (Prof) was put in the hot seat while presenting his first quarter progress report before the Parliament this morning.

In the wake of the devastating university entrance exam results a week before, it was revealed that 96.8pc of students had failed to obtain the passing mark. It has shown a decline from last year which marks the stringent reforms seen in the education system since Berhanu took the ministerial chair.

He reiterated that the results were more of a revelation of the "deep-rooted problems in education" rather than a pointing to a source.

"We're all responsible," underscored the Minister, further stating, "It's more or less a collapsed education system."

His remark did not go unnoticed by the chair of the Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, Employment & Technology Affairs, Negeri Lencho (PhD) who demanded an independent investigation into the dismal results.

"If everyone is responsible, then no one is responsible," Negeri criticised the Minister's suggestion.

A passing suggestion was made by Berhanu that the Parliament should coordinate an independent body to investigate the matter. It received a quick backlash from the Chair who indicated that it is outside of their legal mandate while they may provide a supervisory or assistance role.
