Ministry Takes Bold Step to Combat Climate Change, Soaring Fuel Costs

Minister of Transport & Logistics Alemu Sime (PhD) told Parliament they will strictly enforce the ban on the import of fuel-consuming vehicles for personal use, going forward. The decision is a strategic response to the escalating concerns over climate change and the ever-increasing costs associated with traditional fuel consumption.

Rising fuel costs have prompted policymakers to reevaluate the country's dependence on conventional vehicles and explore avenues that align with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints. The ban aims to curb carbon emissions, promote cleaner air, and encourage the adoption of greener technologies in the automotive sector.

According to Alemu, it shows a global commitment to environmental sustainability and a shift toward eco-friendly transportation alternatives. He told the Standing Committee on Urban Infrastructure &Transport Affairs chaired by Shewit Shenka, that by prohibiting the import of fuel vehicles, the government seeks to accelerate environmentally conscious transportation with the transition to electric vehicles.
