Parliament has unanimously approved the appointments of three high-ranking positions in a surgical fix, contrary to a sweeping administrative reshuffle the public has been speculating about for some time now.
Among the notable changes are Temesgen Tiruneh, head of the National Intelligence & Security Service (NISS) and overseer of the command post installed to respond to the security crisis in the Amhara Regional State, where he once was an administrative chief. He has ascended to the role of Deputy Prime Minister. Taye Asqeselassie, with a substantial background in diplomacy, including a tenure as Ethiopia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and a foreign policy advisor to the Prime Minister, has been appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.
These reshuffles occurred after both ministerial roles were held by Demeke Mekonnen, who recently resigned from the incumbent Prosperity Party (PP).
The reshuffle also introduces Mekdes Daba (MD) as the new minister of Health, succeeding Lia Tadesse (MD), who reigned in the office during the trying time of the COVID-19 pandemic and her tenure at the Ministry over the last five years. She will join an international organisation, sources close to her disclosed.
Before her appointment, Mekdes led a career, including a leadership position at the Deputy Director General Office of the World Health Organisation (WHO), and roles within Ethiopia's medical and academic communities.
