Justice Minister Gedeon Advocates for Legal Professionals

Aug 4 , 2024

Ethiopian lawyers are optimistic about potential tax relief after Justice Minister Gedeon Timotheos urged the Finance Ministry and Addis Abeba Revenue Bureau to allow deductions for business expenses. Lawyers are concerned about the high costs associated with their profession, including fuel, telephone, parking, and travel expenses, which are necessary due to the nature of their work that requires frequent commuting. The Ethiopian Federal Advocates’ Association has been lobbying for changes to tax laws affecting the legal profession for the past three years. Following extensive discussions, all parties have agreed on the need for specialized tax regulations for lawyers. While this regulation is being developed, Gedeon has requested a temporary solution to ease the tax burden on lawyers during the current tax period.
