Fana Broadcasting Corporate's (FBC) board of directors has appointed Bekele Muleta as a new chief, replacing Weldu Yimesel, a longtime stalwart of the company since its restructuring as a corporation. The company, owned by the four endowment companies, runs a successful television service and 12 radio stations, employing over a 1,000 people.
Bekele was a director-general of the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) for six years, before being appointed by the board, chaired by Nigussu Tilahun, communications director at the Prime Minister's Office. The appointment makes Bekele the third CEO of the company since the early 1990s, succeeding Woldu and Mulugeta Gessesse.
Woldu, who holds his first and second degree in law, has been working as Fana's CEO for over a decade.
Considered the nation’s first commercial broadcaster and multi-lingual radio station, Fana was a clandestine voice during the armed struggle against the military Marxist regime. before its establishment as Radio Fana. After the fall of the military regime, Radio Fana was restructured under the ownership of the four endowments - EFFORT, TIRET, Tumsa and Wondo - all affiliated business entities of the different parties of the ruling front.
