Parliament Appoints Federal Judges, Presidents

Parliament has approved the appointment of 16 Federal Supreme Court justices, a president and two deputy presidents for federal higher and first instance courts. Proposed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), parliament approved the appointments during its session that was held on June 13, 2019. The Federal Judicial Administration Council Secretariat has endorsed the candidates. Out of the 310 members of parliament who attended the session, ten members abstained from voting, while one member opposed the appointment. Of the 16 justices of the Supreme Court, six of them are women. Berhanemskel Waqijira was appointed as the new president of the Federal High Court, while Fuad Kiyar becomes president of the Federal First Instance Court.
