Landlords and tenants in Addis Abeba have an extra month to renew residential lease agreements after the City Administration extended the registration deadline from August 6 to September 5, 2026. The Addis Abeba Housing Development & Administration Bureau attributed the extension to public requests for more time. Officials said it would ease congestion at registration centres and allow residents to complete the process more conveniently. The renewal exercise began in early July, following the introduction of an 11.25pc cap on annual residential rent increases. The measure is intended to ease residents' cost-of-living burden and curb illegal and arbitrary increases in the capital's housing market. The City Administration says the registration campaign is part of broader efforts to formalise landlord-tenant relations and enforce the new rent regulations. Residents can complete the renewal process by September 5 at district housing administration offices, designated woreda registration centres and Addis Mesob one-stop service centres upon presenting the required documents.
