Ethiopian Shares for Maritime Access Part of Addis, Hargeisa Deal

Jan 3 , 2024

Ethiopia will grant equity shares of the Ethiopian Airlines Group to Somaliland equivalent to the maritime lease the latter will agree to charge Horn of Africa's landlocked country, a statement Government Communications Service issued today revealed.

However, the statement tuned down the highly controversial move of recognising Somaliland as a sovereign state, which has been a de facto independent country for three decades.

According to the statement, the agreement "includes provisions for the Ethiopian government to make an in-depth assessment towards taking a position regarding the efforts of Somaliland to gain recognition."

The recent memorandum of understanding signed between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and Somaliland's President Moussa Bihi comes against the backdrop of officials who were eyeing fresh port alternatives.

High-ranking officials of the Ministry of Transport & Logistics, including its Minister, Alemu Sime (PhD), and Abdulber Shemsu, the chief of the Ethiopian Maritime Authority, conducted site visits to Berbera in August.
