Displaced Number 1.7m in Amhara, Afar Regions

Over 1.76 million people have been displaced in the Amhara and Afar regional states as a result of the ongoing armed conflict, according to the Government Communications Service. The figure stands at over one million people in the Amhara region alone. Over 300,000qtl of food aid was delivered to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the two regional states last week, according to the Service. Last week, the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) said that the number of people requiring food aid in war-torn northern Ethiopia had surged to more than nine million. An estimated 3.7 million need urgent food aid in Amhara Regional State while some 5.5 million people in Tigray Regional State require emergency humanitarian assistance.
