Addis Abeba City Authorities Freeze Rental Rise

The Addis Abeba City Administration has suspended any increase on rental for 90 days, beginning August 24, 2021.

Approved by a unanimous city cabinet vote, the measure also prohibits the eviction of any tenants.

City officials say the administration takes steps to curtail "undertakings to dismantle the country" and manage the cost of living for the city's residents, blaming "a few greedy individuals" for the problems and accusing them of trying to take advantage of a period of uncertainty.

City officials urge tenants whose rentals increased over the next three months to report to wereda offices.

The suspension is also subject to extension if authorities deem it fit, a statement issued by the city cabinet says.
