UK Relaxes Travel Restrictions

Jun 5 , 2021

The United Kingdom has announced that direct flights from Ethiopia to England will be able to commence beginning June 8, 2021, over two months after Ethiopia was placed on a red list in an effort to protect COVID-19 vaccination programmes against what the UK government called "variants of concern." The ban included all commercial and private flights travelling from the country, while cargo flights were permitted to continue. The latest announcement states that direct flights can arrive in England from Ethiopia, but they must arrive at dedicated terminals at Heathrow and Birmingham airports. Ethiopian Airlines normally operates a daily commercial flight to London's Heathrow Airport. The announcement also included travel advice for British citizens planning a trip to Ethiopia, warning them to stay away from certain areas, including Tigray Regional State, and of "an increase in demonstrations and localised violence around elections" in the country.
