The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has donated water supply spare parts and other basic hygiene materials worth 1.4 million Br to the Bahir Dar Water Supply & Sewerage Service. Up to 170,000 residents of the city are expected to benefit from the support.
The handover ceremony, which took place last week, was attended by Takeshi Matsuyama, a senior representative of the Agency, and Derese Asmare from the Service.
The Agency, which has been working with the Ethiopian government to facilitate water development and transmission in the country's third-largest city, made the donation to strengthen water supply conditions in light of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The spare parts handed over early last week were comprised of surface water pumps, valves, pipes and water storage tankers expected to aid in the construction of new handwashing stations in areas like marketplaces and transportation hubs. The donations also included hygiene supplies like face masks, soap, sanitiser and handheld thermometers.
