About 167 individuals who are suspected of alleged crimes linked to the latest incident in Tigray Regional State have been identified to face charges the Attorney General, Gedion Timothewos (PhD), described today as "grave" and "serious".
Courts have issued arrest warrants while investigations have been ongoing for five alleged crimes. High treason, armed rebellion, outrage against the Constitution, acts of terrorism related to firing rockets, and hostile acts against a friendly country are among the alleged crimes, Gedion disclosed.
A military engagement in the northern part of the country erupted between the federal government and the Tigray Regional State administration earlier this month. An investigation has been commissioned by a team of investigators comprised of the Office of the Attorney General and the Federal Police Commission.
"We've apprehended most of the suspects, especially the military officers and personnel," the Attorney General said.
Early last week his Office put out an order to freeze the assets and bank accounts of businesses operating under the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT), accusing them of attempting to transfer and hide their assets.
"We're working to establish a trustee that will make sure they continue operations," said Gedion, "as well as follow up on the day-to-day activities of the companies."
Gedion also announced that a team has been deployed to Tigray Regional State to conduct a criminal investigation on the mass killings in Mai-Kadra, a town in the South-West Zone of Tigray Regional State.
"The investigation will focus on who did what, why and after receiving whose order," he said. "The investigation is at an early stage, and we'll make it public as soon as it's done."
