Electric Utility Receives 4m Br Through Litigation

Ethiopian Electric Utilities (EEU) obtained close to four million Birr through court cases against accounts with unsettled bills, infrastructure theft and damage in the just ended fiscal year. The Corporation was able to retrieve over 2.4 million Br through 86 court cases related to unsettled bills, lack of trust and those pertaining to contractual agreements, while the remaining cases were related to electric power theft and infrastructure damage. It had initiated 195 court cases this year in Southern Nations, Nationalities & People's and Oromia regional states as well as Addis Abeba, resulting in 30 individuals receiving sentences for three to six years of imprisonment and fines. This was due to the misuse of property and theft. EEU had an additional 296 new criminal cases brought against it, bringing the total number to 508. It saved a total of over 106 million Br through favourable verdicts and appeals.
