Ethiopia's legislators have passed the bill for constitutional interpretation as the way forward to decide on the fate of the upcoming national elections with 25 votes made against it.
During the session, which was attended by 340 MPs, members of the TPLF strongly resisted the proposal tabled by the Legal, Justice & Administration Affairs Standing Committee motioning constitutional interpretation to postpone the upcoming elections.
“We aren’t arguing about any article here, there is no constitutional gap,” said AddisAlem Balem (PhD), executive committee member of the TPLF, whose party decided to prepare to conduct regional elections where it governs. “There should be a political discourse with the presence of political parties with the parliament."
The standing committee made the decision to evaluate the four options presented by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).
