A well-known businessman, Menwyelet Atnafu, was found dead this morning in a swimming pool at the Addis Abeba Hilton, due to what close friends suspect could be a stroke.
A founder and shareholder of Star Business Group (SBG), Menwyelet was at the hotel early this morning where he was walking with friends. He complained of minor pain in his leg and had difficulty walking, according to a close friend. He had wanted to get a massage but was told the service was not available. He then decided to swim but was momentarily found floating.
He was taken immediately to the Bethesada Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to family members.
Menwyelet cofounded SBG with Abebaw Desta. It was a major trading house in the 1990s before the duo were arrested a number of times due to alleged involvement in grand corruption. They were acquitted from many of these allegations subsequently. The company is involved in several sectors of the economy, and its shareholders were a major force behind the Bank of Abyssinia.
In his late 60s, Menwyelet is survived by four children.
