The Ministry of Water & Energy has signed a 2.72 billion Br contract to drill 49 deep wells under the Horn of Africa Sustainable Water Project, backed by a 210 million dollar World Bank grant. The initiative targets improved water access and drought-resilient farming in Somali, Bilate, Asasa, Beqojji, Ataye, Upper Weyto, and Upper Omo. Minister Habtamu Etefa (PhD) said the project reflects institutional progress and urged strong community participation and quality delivery. His advisor, Motuma Mekassa, noted that each well will reach depths exceeding 500 metres. The 240-day project will also assess groundwater reserves for drinking and irrigation use.
