Representatives from the public and contending parties were present observing an ongoing polls in the Tigray Regional State council, in Hadinet Wereda, Meqelle, the seat for the regional state.

Close to 2,672 polling station were open today letting voters in Tigray Regional State cast their ballots for the regional legislative council. Tigray is the only regional state holding elections today, despite a decree by the federal House of Federation to postpone regional and national elections to an undetermined polling date, due to fear of the Corona virus spread.

Polls were open at 6:00am in Meqelle, the seat of Tigray Regional State, welcoming over 2.7 million voters registered to vote in a controversial elections. Some of them were seen waiting to cast their vote since 4:00am on September 9, 2020.

The Federal flags were hoisted alongside the regional state`s in polling stations in Tigray regional state today, where regional elections are being held in defiance of a decree by the House of Federation. The latter has voted in favour of a motion in June 2020 to postpone regional and federal elections until federal health authorities guarantee that COVID-19 pandemic no longer pose a threat to public health.

Close to 2.7 million voters were registered in 94 counties of Tigray Regional State to elect legislators for the regional council.

Voters at Adi Haqi District, Meqelle, were required to have their voter registration and resident identification cards whole wearing face masks were mandatory before they were allowed to enter polling stations.

A local volunteer checked on the temperature of a voter before he entered to cast his vote among candidates representing five political parties and two running on individual platforms for 190 seats in the Tigray Region State. The elections today are declared "unconstitutional" in the process and the outcomes "null and void" by the House of Federation.

An early voter in the seat of the Tigray Region State had his voter`s registration card checked before he casts his vote in defiant regional elections being held just two days ahead of Ethiopian New Year. Polls were equipped with medical corps checking on temperature of voters before ushered in to polling booths.

Voters lined up outside of a polling station in Hadinet District, Meqelle, today to cast their votes in an election Debretsion Gebremichael, the regional state`s deputy president says is an expression of "self-determination".
