The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on May 4, 2021, in response to a statement its Sudanese counterpart made putting into question the 1902 colonial agreement signed between Ethiopia and Great Britain. The statement from the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, issued three days earlier, alleges Ethiopia’s recent activities to shore up domestic support would cause Sudan to put the territorial integrity of Benishangul-Gumuz, where the GERD is located, into question.
