Oxfam Ethiopia has developed a Novel Coronavirus (COVID–19) response strategy and preparedness plan that focuses on four priority geographies in Ethiopia: Addis Abeba, Dire Dawa and the Gambella and Somali regional states.
These locations have been identified as key intervention priorities given the level of vulnerability and the programmatic presence of the non-profits in these areas, with the exception of the capital.
In Addis Abeba, the organisation supported 13 health and isolation centres with water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH) services with an initial allocation of two million Birr.
A total of 27 million Br has also been invested by Oxfam Ethiopia in the Gambella Regional State. This is allocated for responses to the COVID-19 pandemic supporting Nguenyyiel and Terkidi camps as well as Gambella University, which is set aside as an isolation centre.
The strategy in this region supports a total of 150,000 people, 82,000 of which are vulnerable South Sudanese refugees. Oxfam has also begun to support eight isolation centres in the Somali region. It has invested over 30 million Br in the COVID-19 pandemic response across Ethiopia.
