Several trees around the stadium area have been cut down as part of the ongoing renovation of the football field. Addis Abeba has gone through an aesthetic revamp over the past five years, with greenery adorning almost every corner. The Green Legacy initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) envisions planting up to 50 billion trees in a bid to fight climate change. Felling trees has economic reverberations for Ethiopia as the European Union hankers down on deforestation policies, which prohibit the import of commodities like coffee from areas where trees have been cut down in the past three years.
