Girma Temsegen (right), a career diplomat who first joined the foreign office in 1991, has been appointed to serve as a foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD). Having a minister's rank, Girma's debut after taking on his new role was accompanying Akinwumi A. Adesina (PhD), president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), during his recent visit to Ethiopia.
A student of political science and international relations, studying at Addis Abeba University and Leipziger University in Germany, Girma served the foreign office for 30 years. His three decades in diplomacy includes ambassadorship to Turkey and Cote d'Ivoire. He had also served as director-general at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for press and information, international organisations, public diplomacy, IGAD and Africa directorate. In the mid-2010s, he was chief of the cabinet.
Born in Nedjo, Wellega of Oromia Regional State, his long career in diplomacy includes a consul general in China and Germany, the latter where he had served as charge d'affaires.
His current posting had been left vacant since the time of former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. He was advised by Berhane G. Kristos, under the rank of a minister.
