Telecom Facilitates the Lifeline of Emergency Management

Oct 2 , 2023

The state-owned Ethio telecom has partnered with the Addis Abeba City Administration's Technology & Innovation Development Bureau to digitise data collection and improve the response time of the department of Fire & Disaster Risk Management Commission. Yikfelew W. Meskel, the deputy commissioner of the Commission, indicated that the collaboration would mitigate damage caused by emergencies, the most common being fire, flood and traffic accidents in the capital. The commission has been using a manual dispatch system, which is slower and has limited fleet management capabilities. The official also stated that the top three accidents in the city are fire, flood, and traffic. According to Seid Aragaw, the chief marketing officer of Ethio telecom, their goal is to enhance emergency response using computer-aided dispatch and geographic information systems while unifying the connection. This system is expected to improve response time, which is crucial in emergency management. Tariku Demesse, the chief technology officer of Ethio telecom, announced the company is pleased to offer its expertise and 5G connectivity for the process, which will be fully operational in a maximum of four months. This emergency management solution will be implemented using nine contact centres and 15 call agents and dispatchers.
