An estimated demand of electric power, in megawatt hours, by data centres operating in Ethiopia, largely crypto mining companies, equivalent to around 30pc of total national electricity demand in 2025. In a country where nearly half of the population lacks access to electricity, and only 22pc of households have legal grid connections, that a single, highly speculative activity absorbs almost one-third of the national power supply is structurally incoherent.
