The national density of core health workers for every 10,000 people, far short of the WHO’s benchmark of 23. Addis Abeba has 38 times as many core health workers per capita as the Southwest Ethiopia Regional State. Doctors, nurses and midwives are drawn to the capital and a handful of major towns, where private clinics are more numerous, schools and services are better, and the opportunity to combine public-sector jobs with more private practice makes staying in the cities an obvious choice.
