One of the four individuals confirmed today by health authorities in Ethiopia with Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a senior staffer of the African Union (AU). This led AU Chairman Moussa Faki to enter quarantine.
"As a precautionary measure, I'm under quarantine as are some other colleagues in my office," the Chairperson tweeted today.
The 72-year-old Mauritanian, who resides in the capital and works at the AU, returned from Congo Brazzaville on March 14 and was tested six days later after noticing COVID-19 symptoms. Six people who were said to have close contact with him have also been quarantined for further testing.
Two Ethiopian females and a 61-year-old pharmacist working in Adama (Nazareth) are the remaining three people who have acquired the virus. Of the four new cases, two of them do not have a travel history.
The addition of the four new cases pushed the total number of people with the virus in Ethiopia to 16. So far, Ethiopia has reported no deaths or recoveries. But two of the earlier cases that tested positive have recovered well enough that they will soon be discharged after testing negative, sources disclosed. Two Japanese nationals already departed to Japan earlier this week.
