Addis Riverside Development Launched, Twice

Oct 1 , 2019

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and Deputy Mayor Takele Uma attended the launching of a riverside development project this morning in Addis Abeba, an event held twice in a year.

This time around, it is the China Communications Construction Corporation contracted to do the work, replacing the Italian Geom Luigi Varnero. The Chinese company took over the project, previously awarded to Varnero, in a controversial standoff a few weeks after the first launching in February of this year.

The project includes the construction of a central square on 48ha of land and the rehablitation and treatment of 12Km of river that runs from Entoto mountain to Peacock Park. Expected to consume 50 million dollars, the project will be constructed in two phases with an expected completion this coming May. It is part of a larger one-billion-dollar project that aspires to develop the riverside that crosses the entire city for 54Km.

Last year Varnero was awarded to develop one hectare of the project for 2.5 billion Br with a ceremony that was attended by the Deputy Mayor. The budget for the project was from the City Administration.

However, after negotiations between the governments of Ethiopia and China, the latter has pledged to finance the 12Km project, which includes the portion that was awarded to Varnero.
